A large majority of schools are experiencing an increase in mental health difficulties among their pupils. With the constant demands made on staff from the curriculum and evidence collecting, supporting these children can feel overwhelming and unachievable at times. As a play therapist, I can offer support through specific interventions and general advice. I can work independently as well as complement existing support, such as specialist 1-1 TAs, and other therapists. I can also help bridge the gap between school interventions and outside organisations like CAHMS and multidisciplinary teams. Many schools have found play therapy to be a very beneficial and cost-effective way of using their pupil premium funding, as it has the potential to help almost any child regardless of their needs.
It is important to have a play therapist who is accredited by an organisation on the Professional Standards Authority so the school feels confident that the support and advice they are receiving comes from a highly trained and qualified professional who maintains the highest possible standards and follows an ethical code of practice.
I can work with schools to promote positive mental health in a variety of ways:
1-1 play therapy sessions for children and young people
Group play therapy
Advice and consultations for SENCo, individual staff, and class teams
